A recent study indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
