British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
